Think BLUE

Even my blog site is called “greenerjoy” as my first attempt to designing this accurately.  After listening to the change that is known as “thinking blue” I realize the faults of many environmental thinking.

I find myself driving to class when I’m in a rush but then there is parking, pedestrians dodging in and out of every location, I’m practically playing “Frogger” and can end up taking longer then if I had simply WALKED or better yet,biked. 

Adam Werbach addressed the new way to change is by taking small steps, rather than none at all.  If you can’t go big go home right? Well, taking small steps IS going big when dealing with the earth.

Coca-Cola most littered brand

Time to decide on a project.  We discussed in class a few ideas and it was so hard to choose.  I really liked the idea of collecting litter from the highways or around campus and seeing which brand was the most littered.  Cigarrettes are not a surprising one to hear, and makes me glad for the new no smoking on campus policy beginning next year. 

I looked up some articles and found that in the UK the most littered brand was Coca-Cola.  This was suprising! The brand released a statement in January of 2010 in THIS  article saying their goals of “going green” and promoting a sustainable lifestyle.  One month later in THIS it was found to be the most littered.  Ironic but also since it was so shortly after their new campaign, the message has since been more followed.  When I think of Coca-Cola I think of a company that is aiming for sustainable methods.

Toms

TOMS shoe brand is based on the promise of “One for One”.  Meaning, for every pair of shoes purchased TOMS brand will give a pair of shoes to a child in need.

Read TOMS website to learn further into their cause and browse the shoe options! (So many cute patterns to choose from, and if this is helping children, how can I not buy a pair?)

They sum it up by saying that the “One for One” movement is about the individiual making the deliberate choice to help better children’s lives.  This small step contributes to an overall greater good, and every effort counts. 

 

This video covers more in depth the effect this brand is trying to bring awareness towards.  I couldn’t help but get chills and automatically fall for the TOMS movement and associate only good thoughts to the brand after this video.

Misconceptions of “sustainability”

In this article by Spencer B. Beebe he discusses the problem behind using the word “sustainability” so freely.  It has been conveyed to the public that everything has the potential to be reusable or under the sustainable category.  I thought this was an interesting article because it is an issue with communicating this topic accurately. In order to make an impact, communicating this idea to generate awareness is needed to be portrayed as allowing an individual the possibility to contribute. For things to change, the biggest piece of advice is to begin now and not wait around for the government to change policies.

Why wait on national political solutions when there is so much good work to be done at home? Many people can fall into the “we see the world is in crisis, what can we do about it?” As overwhelming as the issues of the environment are, it is the small things that should be focused on in every day life. I am happy to see that the university has a website dedicated to the sustainable movement.

Ferdi Rizkiyanto aka “Pepey”

 

Ferdi Rizkiyanto, who is known as Pepey in the art world, is a graphic designer and famous for his illustrations regarding global warming.  This is one of his favorite pieces of work because it allowed him to pay attention to detail and make a convincing and grabbing message.

An active demonstration on the wealth and income of society over the course of 200 years.  A brief history of the power of inflation and the impact it has on different countries.  For those that think graphs are boring, Hans Rosling uses Gapminder which is an animated way to create and show graphs.

First sign of campus action

 

I made my blog official today and was happy to see a potential blog worthy display as I walked out of the library.

In front of the Knight Library was a demonstration made up of water bottles, with signs about the water bottle consumption used on campus.

                  

This point of this display is to address the overuse of bottled water and to showcase the impact that using bottled water can have on the environment and the consumer’s wallet.    

 

 

The issue isn’t just the focus of bottled water however, it is the fact that most people use a bottle one time, and throw it out.  The amount of waste this creates on the planet is alarming, and excessive considering people have the choice to use a water bottle that can be reused.

Chris Jordan is the activist that started the display today and it was up until 5 pm.
